Business Setup in Dubai from the UK

Business setup in Dubai for UK founders and companies: mainland and free zone compared, offshore signposted, UK documents prepared in London, and your licence, visas and bank application handled by our Dubai team.

Setting up a Dubai company as a UK founder, company or family

Dubai licenses businesses in two main ways. A mainland licence comes from Dubai’s Department of Economy and Tourism (DET), and a free zone licence comes from the authority that runs that zone. Which one suits you depends on who your customers are, whether you will live in the UAE and what the business does.

Gatestone Group plans the work with you in London during UK hours. Our Dubai team, based at the head office in Al Saqr Business Tower on Sheikh Zayed Road, then files with DET or the free zone, books your visa appointments and goes to the bank with you.

The licence itself can usually be obtained while you stay in the UK. A residence visa cannot: it needs a short trip for the medical test and the Emirates ID fingerprints.

Can a British founder, or a UK company, own a Dubai business?

Yes. A British citizen can hold the shares, act as manager and carry on living in the UK, and you do not need UAE nationality or residence to apply. The shareholder can also be your UK limited company. The Dubai company then becomes its subsidiary, which adds some UK paperwork .

Can you own 100% of a Dubai company?

Usually, yes. Dubai's free zones allow 100% foreign ownership, and since 2021 the mainland has done the same for most activities, after federal law removed the need for an Emirati majority shareholder. A short list of activities with "strategic impact" still carries limits, among them security and defence, telecommunications, banking and insurance, and commercial agencies. We check your activity against that list before anything is filed.

How much of the setup can you do from the UK?

Nearly all of the licence stage. The trade name, approvals, documents and signatures can be handled from Britain while our Dubai team files for you. The residence visa works differently. Applicants aged 18 and over take a medical test in the UAE, and anyone aged 15 or over gives fingerprints for the Emirates ID at an ICP (federal identity authority) service centre.

Do you need a UAE residence visa?

Not to own or manage the company. A residence visa matters if you will live in Dubai, sponsor your family or spend long periods there. An Oxford data analytics consultancy of two people, working from Oxfordshire and serving Gulf clients by video and short visits, may need nothing more than a free zone licence with no visa. Run that way, though, the company could be UK tax resident, so read the FAQ on running a Dubai company from the UK first.

Which documents will you need from the UK?

Each individual shareholder provides a passport copy, a photograph, proof of UK address and a short description of the planned activity. Some free zones and banks also ask for a CV or a bank reference. When a UK company is the shareholder, its Companies House papers are needed too, such as the certificate of incorporation, the articles and a board resolution approving the Dubai company.

Can UK residents start a business in Dubai?

Why UK entrepreneurs choose Gatestone Group for business setup in Dubai

Mainland or free zone is an early decision in any Dubai setup, and it shapes the licence, the office, the visas and the tax. Between them, our leaders have more than 35 years of experience to bring to it.

Setup work that starts with UK paperwork

A Dubai file begins with paperwork from Britain: Companies House records, FCDO apostilles and UK bank references. We deal with those at our UK office, 45 Albemarle Street, Mayfair, W1S 4JL. Start with a meeting in Mayfair or a video call, timed around your UK working day.

One named consultant on your file

One consultant holds your file from the first call to the open bank account, so you never have to brief a stranger. They know which authority has your application this week and what it is waiting for.

Dubai mainland, Dubai free zones and the other emirates

Beyond the Dubai mainland, we set up companies in more than 40 free zones across the UAE, several of them outside Dubai. When the numbers point that way, a Sharjah, Ajman or Abu Dhabi option goes into your comparison beside the Dubai one.

Visas, the bank and corporate tax after the licence

After the licence, our Dubai team applies for the establishment card (the company's immigration file) and your residence visa, prepares the bank application and registers the company for corporate tax within the three months the Federal Tax Authority allows.

An itemised quote, and support after the licence

Before you pay, you receive a written quote that separates government fees, third-party costs and our professional fee, line by line. After the licence, the same team handles renewals, amendments and questions, so the people who formed the company also look after its upkeep.

What Dubai offers a UK business

Dubai pairs full ownership for most activities with a choice of mainland or free zone licences, and UAE corporate tax applies only above a threshold (see the tax section). About 250,000 new companies were set up across the UAE in 2025, according to the UAE Ministry of Economy and Tourism, 2026. That took the national total above 1.4 million; neither figure is for Dubai alone.

The sectors Dubai's free zones are organised around

Several Dubai free zones are built around a sector: [link: DMCC company formation] for commodities and trading, [link: DIFC company formation] for financial services and Dubai Internet City company formation for technology. Meydan, IFZA and Dubai South license a broad mix of service and trading activities. Creative work is a British strength here.

Reaching UAE, Gulf and wider markets from Dubai

Clients abroad can be served from the day the licence is issued. Selling inside the UAE depends on the licence: a mainland company trades directly, while a free zone company reaches Dubai mainland customers through a DET permit, a branch licence or a local distributor. For UK firms with Gulf customers, a Dubai base turns a meeting in Riyadh, Doha or Muscat into a short regional flight rather than a trip from London.

How Dubai's costs compare with other emirates

Dubai is rarely the low-cost emirate, though its free zone entry prices sit closer to the others than many founders expect. Meydan Free Zone and Dubai South Business Hub both publish licence and desk packages from about £2,550 a year. If a lean licence matters more to you than a Dubai address, we price  business setup in Sharjah or  business setup in Ajman alongside.

Who does Dubai suit?

Dubai suits UK businesses that need clients to see a Dubai address, plan to sell to the Dubai mainland or to government, or work in finance, trading, technology, media or professional services. It suits a business less well if it needs industrial land at low rent or only wants an inexpensive licence; Sharjah, Ajman or Ras Al Khaimah can often meet those needs for less.

Why British founders choose Dubai for company formation

In 2025, 2,733 new UK companies became members of Dubai Chamber of Commerce, according to the chamber’s annual results, 2026. That was a 5% rise on 2024 and put the UK fourth among foreign nationalities. The points below explain the pull, and the last one says when Dubai is not the answer.

Business setup options in Dubai: mainland, free zone or offshore

A mainland company is licensed by DET and carries a Dubai Unified Licence number. It can trade directly with customers anywhere in the UAE and bid for government work. It needs an Ejari-registered tenancy (Dubai's official tenancy registration), and DET prices the licence partly on your rent. Some professional licences may still involve a UAE national as local service agent, and we confirm whether yours does before you commit. Our Dubai mainland business setup page covers the mainland in detail.

Dubai has 27 free zones run by 11 free zone authorities, according to the Dubai Free Zones Council's website, checked on 17 October 2026. Each zone licenses companies for its own activity list, sells packages that include a desk or office, and sponsors visas up to a quota set by that package or space. IFZA, for instance, is a free zone within the Dubai Integrated Economic Zones group. For a zone-by-zone comparison, see Dubai free zone business setup.

Key differences, and what changed in 2025

Until 2025, a Dubai free zone company that wanted mainland customers usually worked through a local distributor. That is now one option among several. Under Executive Council Resolution No. 11 of 2025, DET can license a free zone company to work on the Dubai mainland, with its free zone authority's approval and for activities on DET's list. In October 2025 DET launched the Free Zone Mainland Operating Permit, which also opens government tenders to permit holders.

Which structure suits your business?

Start with your customers. Clients abroad usually point to a free zone, while customers across the UAE, or government buyers, point to the mainland or to a free zone company holding the permit. A York building conservation practice that wants to bid for heritage restoration work let by Dubai government bodies shows how the choice plays out. If its surveyors will spend much of the year on Dubai sites, a mainland company gives it the steadier base.

How we help you choose, and change course later

We review your activity, customers, visa needs and budget, then put a mainland option and a free zone option side by side in writing. The choice is also easier to revisit than it used to be. Federal Decree-Law No. 20 of 2025 lets a company move its commercial registration between the emirates, free zones and financial free zones. The company keeps its legal identity and contracts, and is not wound up and formed again. A move still needs compatible registration systems, no legal obstacle and approval from the authorities involved.

How Gatestone Helps UK Businesses Set Up in Dubai

We help you choose the correct licensed activity, since it shapes your licence, costs, and approvals. Getting this right at the start prevents delays and expensive amendments later.

We match you to Dubai mainland or the right free zone based on your activity, clients, and budget. The goal is fit, not a default option.

We check and reserve a compliant trade name with the relevant authority, making sure it meets UAE naming rules. This avoids rejections and keeps your application on track.

We prepare and submit your licence application, manage the approvals, and answer queries from the authority. You stay updated at each stage without chasing paperwork across departments yourself.

We arrange your investor or employment visa and Emirates ID through the correct channels. We guide you on medicals, biometrics, and timelines so residency steps run in order.

We introduce you to suitable banks, prepare your documents, and support the account application. This improves your odds of approval and cuts the back-and-forth that often slows accounts.

Once you are live, we stay on for renewals, visa additions, and ongoing compliance. Support continues well beyond the licence as your Dubai business grows and changes.

How Much Does It Cost to Set Up a Business in Dubai from the UK?

Business Licence Costs

Licence fees depend on jurisdiction, activity, and the number of visas attached. Mainland and free zone pricing differ, so we give you a figure matched to your chosen setup.

Visa Costs

Each residency visa has its own cost for application, medical, and Emirates ID. The total depends on how many visas you need for yourself, partners, or staff, which we confirm.

Office & Workspace Costs

Options run from flexi-desk packages in free zones to leased mainland offices. Your activity and visa count often set the minimum space required, which we build into your quote.

Annual Renewal Costs

Licences renew each year, with fees for the licence, office, and any visas. Renewal usually costs less than first-year setup, and we flag deadlines early so nothing lapses by accident.

Cost in GBP vs AED

Fees are charged in AED, so your final spend in pounds moves with the exchange rate. We can show estimates in both GBP and AED so UK founders can budget.

Typical First-Year Cost Breakdown

First-year cost usually combines licence, office, visas, and government fees into a single figure. We break this down line by line so you can see exactly where your money goes.

Corporate Banking Support

We prepare your application, match you to banks that suit your profile, and guide you through compliance checks. This improves approval odds and cuts the delays that often frustrate founders.

Visa & Residency Assistance

From investor visas to family sponsorship, we run the residency process end to end. We coordinate medicals, Emirates ID, and approvals so your status is secured without confusion.

Compliance Guidance

We keep you aligned with UAE rules on VAT, corporate tax, and licence conditions. Clear guidance keeps your Dubai company compliant and clear of penalties caused by missed filings.

Ongoing Business Support

Beyond setup, we help with renewals, amendments, extra visas, and structural changes as you grow. One team handles the moving parts, so you are not juggling several providers at once.

Dedicated Relationship Management

You keep one main contact who knows your business and history, instead of restarting with new staff each time. That continuity makes renewals, changes, and future plans faster and simpler.

Why UK Entrepreneurs Trust Gatestone with Banking, Visas & Compliance?

Opening a Corporate Bank Account in Dubai from the UK

Banking Requirements & Required Documents

Banks usually want your trade licence, shareholder passports, proof of address, and a business plan or activity summary. Some also request bank references or turnover figures. We prepare a clean, complete file.

Can You Open a Bank Account Remotely?

Some banks allow remote onboarding, while many still need an in-person meeting or signature. We tell you which banks accept remote steps and prepare you for any visit needed to complete it.

Which Dubai Banks Work Best for UK Entrepreneurs?

The right bank depends on your activity, turnover, and whether you trade locally or abroad. Rather than push one name, we match you to banks with experience approving UK-owned Dubai companies.

Common Reasons Applications Get Delayed

Delays often come from incomplete documents, unclear business activity, or a profile the bank treats as high risk. We pre-check your file against these points so your application is not held up.

Expected Approval Timelines

Approval can take from a couple of weeks to longer, depending on the bank and your profile. We set realistic expectations and keep things moving so your account opens without avoidable hold-ups.

UK Tax & Compliance Considerations for Dubai Business Owners

The UAE applies a federal corporate tax on business profits above a set threshold, run by the Federal Tax Authority. Some free zone activities may qualify for relief, depending on the conditions.

Leaving the UK does not automatically end your UK tax residency, which follows the Statutory Residence Test. Your days in Britain and ties matter, so check your position with a qualified adviser.

Yes. You can keep a UK limited company while running a Dubai company, and many founders run both. How they interact for tax depends on residency and control, so plan with advice.

UK CFC rules can attribute some overseas company profits back to UK-resident owners in certain cases. Whether they apply depends on your circumstances, so review this point with a UK tax adviser.

The UK and UAE have a double taxation agreement that can stop the same income being taxed twice. How it applies to your situation varies, so confirm it with a tax professional.

Your Dubai licence must be renewed each year to stay valid, along with linked visas. Missing a renewal can trigger fines or suspension, so we track deadlines and renew on time.

We focus on your UAE company formation and coordinate smoothly with your UK accountant or tax adviser. That joined-up approach keeps your British and Dubai affairs aligned and reduces costly mistakes.
